Verve: Guest Artist Series

Verve: Guest Artist Series is a free series of lectures, presentations, and events that fosters dialogue among students, parents, educators, collectors, and practicing artists.  Guest artists share their artistic practice in free public events that ignite new ideas and explore the role of art in building and bridging communities.

Faheem Majeed is an artist, curator, and community facilitator.  Majeed blends his unique experience as a non-profit administrator, curator and artist to create works that focus on institutional critique and exhibitions that leverage collaboration to engage his immediate, and the broader community, in meaningful dialogue.

From 2005-2011, Majeed served as Executive Director and Curator for the South Side Community Art Center(SSCAC).  In this role he was responsible for managing operations, staff, programs, fundraising and curation for the SSCAC. During his time with the SSCAC, Majeed curated exhibitions of numerous artists including Elizabeth Catlett, Dr. David Driskell, Charles White, Jonathan Green, and Theaster Gates.

In 2012 Majeed served as artist in residence for the University of Chicago’s Arts in Public Life Initiative.

Majeed received his BFA from Howard University and his MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).  While at UIC, he received both the Lincoln and DFI Fellowships and was nominated for the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant.  He was also part of a small group of students selected to take part in the New Insight exhibit during Art Chicago.

Majeed has participated in multiple panels, committees, and lectures at various institutions including Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, 3Arts, and the Hyde Park Art Center

Currently Majeed is associate director and faculty of University of Illinois at Chicago’s School Art & Art History.
